I've been lurking for awhile now, rarely do I have much to say. My jewelry sales go in spurts, I've removed some items that I have sold at craft sales, but be sure to check out what I have left...still over 300 items.

A quick hello to all! I'm known as Betsy in Maine on several jewelry groups so a quick hello to any members lurking here. I deal in vintage and antique jewelry both online and at a B&M mall. I am especially drawn to vintage sterling pieces from Mexico and the wonderful enameled works from Scandinavia. I am excited about Bonanzle because it has the feel that eBay had in 1998 - friends gathered together helping each other.

I hope I am in the correct place for my other love, creating jewelry from vintage glass beads, Swarovski, sterling, copper and gemstones. If this type of jewelry belongs in handmade, please let me know.

Bye for now, 6 hours of garden work to do and 3 hours in which to do it :)

Jewelry 101 and Jewelry 202 are two books worth reading. I've learned a ton in the last 3 weeks (yeah, weeks). Obviously I still have tons more to learn, but those are great books for describing stones, etc. Also a basic book on gemology would be helpful. I checked out "Gem Identification Made Easy" from my local library. I also would suggest buying a loupe with triplet lenses (I have both 10x and 15x one). Make sure they are "quality" and black in color. I also bought a jewelry ruler and a gem size chart to take with me to auctions, sales, etc. And by far, the best investment I've made so far was on a DIGITAL jewelry caliper. It is amazing and makes measuring stuff SO easy. I got them all from Widget Supply (search Google for "triplet loupe" then look at the products). I think I've spent less than $40 including shipping; I should not have purchased the 15x loupe so it could have been cheaper.

About pricing, I am not really sure what to say! The same item on eBay will often sell for about 10% of what it sells for on Ruby Lane. I have found that you will get much more per piece by listing individually than in lots due to the fact that people collect specific types. I am currently building a "what's selling" database for myself looking at what others are selling.

However, in many cases pricing seems to have no rhyme or reason. Signed usually do better than unsigned, but not always (especially a designer piece that is unsigned). Old is usually better than new (but not always). Condition is very important (unless the piece is rare). I have noticed that sterling silver and southwest stuff is doing well, but so are other things. And historical values aren't always helpful--the piece that sold for $40 (even on eBay) two years ago may not move for $10 today. And that's not just the current economy because the opposite is also true. Honestly, except for the really common items from Monet, Sarah Coventry, etc. (talking about specific pieces here that are in huge supply), I think you could price almost randomly and find buyers.

I suppose there are ranges (e.g., simple earrings won't do much better than $10 or $15 and that's usually the REALLY high end), but there are even exceptions to those. I don't plan on holding many pieces for in depth research just in case they are "really rare." Would rather just list and turn a blind eye if someone else gets a great deal--as long as I'm not losing money on it, great!

Of course, there are people who have been doing this for a LONG time, and I bet they can provide some awesome education to us all.

Me, too, Springsale! I know nothing about jewelry...gems, stones, metals, etc. Quite a few pieces are vintage, but I have no idea their worth.

Well, call me crazy. I decided it would be easy to sell jewelry and it does not take up space. The only problem with that is I do not know hardly anything about jewelry. You can probably tell by reading some of my descriptions. It is a lot easier if it is signed, of course. But, I bought a bunch of jewelry within the last 2-3 years, so I guess I will just muddle through it. Still have a lot of list in my booth. Though I would join here and maybe learn something.
